Practical solutions to ocean challenges are nothing more than good ideas if they lack strong leaders to implement them. As a core component of our mission, the Center for Ocean Solutions strives to enhance leadership skills in existing ocean leaders as well as establish strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills in the next generation of blue planet pioneers. The Center does this by fostering development of interdisciplinary problem-solving skills for graduate students and early career professionals through our MARINE and Early Career Fellow programs.
Engaging current and future ocean leaders of all levels and at all career stages—from masters students to city and county officials to legislators—is an underpinning of our work. The Center’s leadership development, engagement, communication and education staff work with each initiative to build outreach and education capability into every project.
The Center also broadens the reach of its research by engaging decisionmakers in productive dialogues. Whether through one-on-one meetings or more formal workshops, our goal is to develop and strengthen the linkages between our research and decisionmakers’ needs to promote measurable changes on the water.
The Monterey Area Research Institutions' Network for Education (MARINE) enhances ocean-focused graduate education in the Monterey Bay region through inter-institutional networking and interdisciplinary leadership development programs.
We are a Center for Ocean Solutions collaboration with seven Monterey Bay area academic campuses that fosters inter-institutional connections through short-courses, seminars, workshops and cross-campus networking events.
To improve the flow of information between science and policy, the Center collaborates with partners to host presentations, forums, advisory groups, workshops and courses for ocean and coastal decision makers in the private and public sectors.
Early career fellows team with our staff, visiting fellows, affiliated researchers and faculty on projects tackling the greatest challenges facing the world's coasts and ocean.
The Center’s Early Career Fellows program draws on and enhances the academic and professional skills of early career professionals.
Early Career Fellows specialize in science and engineering, law and policy or social science.
Our Early Career Fellows move on to rewarding careers after leaving the Center.
In line with the core component of our mission, the Center for Ocean Solutions works to create sharable workshop and course curriculum from our leadership development activities for use by our partners, collaborators, and other education programs. Compiled by the Center’s staff, curriculum packages are available for download, and can be modified to suit a variety of learner needs.
